Every direct booking starts with a Google search. Reviews win it.

Direct bookings are the margin

Every booking that comes through an OTA — Booking.com, Agoda, Expedia — costs you 15 to 20 percent in commission. Every booking that comes through your own website costs you nothing. The difference between a hotel that fills through direct search and one that relies on OTAs is, quite literally, the owner's take-home.

What drives that difference? When a traveller searches "hotel in Seminyak" or "boutique hotel in Chiang Mai," Google shows the map results with star ratings and review counts. The traveller clicks the one that looks best — and "best" means the most reviews, the highest rating, the freshest praise. Not the cheapest. Not the closest. The most-reviewed.

A hotel with 300 Google reviews at 4.8 gets the direct click. A hotel with 40 reviews at 4.4 pays OTA commission on the booking the direct click would have given them for free. Reviews are the lever that moves bookings from the commission channel to the direct one.

Why most hotels under-review

Your guests are happy. The checkout is smooth. The problem is timing: by the time they are home, the stay is a memory, and an unprompted review is not going to happen. The front desk asks in person — the guest says "of course!" — and then never does it.

An email a day later lands in an inbox the traveller is trying to ignore on holiday. A survey link gets abandoned halfway. The intention was real; the follow-through never happens, because the ask came at the wrong moment, on the wrong channel.

WhatsApp is different. Your guest has been using WhatsApp on this trip — messaging family, sharing photos, talking to friends back home. A thank-you message with a one-tap review link, arriving on WhatsApp about two hours after checkout, meets them where they already are, while the stay is still fresh.

How it works

Guest checkout is the trigger. When a guest checks out, ScoreJack asks them for a Google review on WhatsApp — automatically, politely, at the right moment.

  1. About two hours after checkout, the guest gets a warm WhatsApp thank-you with a one-tap link to your hotel's Google review page. They have just left, the stay is fresh, and they are already on their phone.
  2. No review in 48 hours? One gentle nudge.
  3. Still nothing at seven days? One final ask — then it stops forever.

It stops instantly on any reply, link click, posted review, or opt-out word. Every guest gets the same Google link — no gating. Messages send during business hours only, paced like a person.

Connecting your hotel system

If your property management system can send a webhook when a guest checks out — Cloudbeds, Mews, Little Hotelier, SiteMinder, or any PMS with webhook capability — ScoreJack receives the guest's name and phone number and starts the sequence. One setup, then it runs itself.

If your system supports Zapier, you can use that too — our Zapier app is in early access (email us for the invite), or connect via Zapier's Webhooks action today.

No PMS yet? Add a guest manually in ten seconds — name and phone number in the portal.
